The AMO established the Psychiatry Referral Service in 2002 because family physicians who provide the bulk of primary mental health care to the citizens of Ottawa found it very difficult to access psychiatrists. The service is funded by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care and the AMO acts as a clearing house. Primary care physicians contact the AMO and are given names of psychiatrists who are available to provide a consultation and follow up as required. To date, the service has provided more than 8,000 referral requests to primary care physicians throughout Ottawa.
